The last time your knees touched the sand, you were young enough to enjoy building sandcastles but too old to take a dump in the water. This Saturday, Zephyrhills is inviting you back to the beach to indulge in some sports, sun, and sexy athletes at the annual Dig the Beach volleyball championships. Twelve teams will vie for the title, bragging rights, and a $10,000 grand prize. Hell, if we were capable of playing well with others, exerting energy in the hot sun, and slapping hard balls over the net, we’d sign up for sure. But since we prefer drinking beer in the shade, you’ll find us courtside on Ocean Drive watching champs Mike DiPierro and Steve Grotowski defend their titles as we cheer on the underdogs.
If you want to — gasp — participate, the pros will hold a clinic on the beach from 5 to 7 p.m. so you can learn to dig, serve, and spike like a pro. And since no respectable tournament can end without a party, meet the winners and losers at Pilikia by the Pool (1751 Collins Ave., Miami Beach). Visit www.digthebeach.com.
