You want to know why jazz singer Jon Hendricks is a pimp? (1) Dude wears a sailor hat for no goddamn reason. (2) He spits verse into the mike faster than Twista. (Twista reference!) (3) And his voice is a finer instrument than all Stradivarius violins put together.
Hendricks’s crooning is just one of the three acts that make up a unique show at the Arsht Center. Its name, Vocalese, comes from the style of vocal jazz invented by Hendricks. Coheadliners the Manhattan Transfer and New York Voices picked up the harmony and ran with it. Among the nine total performers (not including band accompaniment), Vocalese boasts 11 Grammys and more lung capacity than a zeppelin. The name of the game here is vocal inventiveness. Whether soloing, harmonizing, scatting, or just opening up the pipes, these cats can really sing.
