Even if you adore the feeling of having your feet planted firmly on the ground, riding a surfboard and allowing a wave to cradle you as you glide to shore is a sensation akin to flying. That is, flying with water spraying in your face and the threat of falling off the nine-by-two-foot piece of wood beneath your feet. When it comes to surfing, Miami is no Barbados or Costa Rica, but when there’s a hurricane a-brewin’ off the coast of Miami Beach, you’ll undoubtedly find some pretty bitchin’ waves. And this Friday, the Surfrider Foundation will bring the balmy weather by way of two surf films, cult fave Echo Beach and soon-to-be legendary Spectacular Adventures.
This wet Surf Flick Double Feature begins at 7 p.m., with organic grub and ’80s music to do the swim to, followed by the films at 8 and 9:30 p.m., respectively. You’ll want to stick around for the entire evening, because a totally tubular raffle is sandwiched between the films and will offer surf and beach gear. Admission is nine dollars in advance and ten dollars at the door, with proceeds benefiting the local Surfrider chapter’s efforts to clean up local beaches.
