In the late 1960s, Mexican businessman Eduardo Velázquez struck up a friendship and eventual professional partnership with legendary automotive designer Carol Shelby. After working as an official Shelby parts distributor, Velázquez began limited production of Shelby de México’s Mustang notchback in 1967.
He built fewer than 200 cars his first year, but production steadily rose. However, not until the mid-’80s did a Mexican-built Shelby cross the border into the United States.
Today, it’s one of the most sought-after collector cars. And it’s one of several makes and models that’ll be on display during the Antique and Classic Car Show at the Cauley Square Historic Village (22400 Old Dixie Hwy., Miami) this Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
“We get a lot of ’57 Chevys, a lot of ’69 Camaros, old Cadillacs, and we always get a special car, the Mexican Shelby,” event promoter Gerry Perez says.
