The Main Street Players, Miami Lakes’ resident community theater company, departs from its tradition of producing Broadway or off-Broadway hits to mount the world premiere of an early work by one of South Florida’s best playwrights, David Michael Sirois. A two-time Carbonell Award nominee for his plays Brothers Beckett and Off Center of Nowhere, Sirois wrote Secrets of the La Croix back in 2003, when he was still a theater student, and it has been heard by audiences only as a staged reading. “This is the first time I even submitted the script to be done,” he says. “Revisiting [it] 11 years later was like going back in time and spying on myself as a beginning writer.” A play to be filed under the “dysfunctional family farce” genre, the ensemble comedy is set during an eventful Thanksgiving dinner for the La Croix family, led by patriarch Roger. The day begins with a busted TV set and continues to spiral downward. Roger’s son returns from college with a secret, which prompts other family members to divulge their secrets as well. Sirois was offered free rein to direct the show for the Main Street Players production, providing indispensable, professional theater guidance to the hardworking, unpaid players.
