Something good must come from George W. Bush’s horrific presidency. It’s the American way. And maybe something already has: a renewal of the revolutionary spirit upon which this nation was founded, a return to the Sixties sensibility of protesting evil doings by the government. A brutal, unjust, and seemingly endless war; political chicanery that would make Richard Nixon blush; illegal eavesdropping on citizens — time to, as Bob Marley put it, get up, stand up, stand up for your rights. A group called S&P: A Progressive Women’s Alliance has chosen the 1984th day of President Bush’s ill-fated tenure to host a program — “1984: A Reality Check” — that will feature readings from George Orwell’s prescient novel 1984, folk songs, and a general sense of the power of people to fight oppression. S&P formed as an informal discussion group after the 2004 elections, but, responding to the downward spiral of personal liberty predicted in Orwell’s book and manifested by the current U.S. regime, has grown into a vital alliance.
