Sundays are traditionally the de facto day for reggae music. We suppose the concept is to chillax to the max just before the workweek starts, and there’s no better way to do that than with irie riddims to get your head bobbing and your toes tapping. Which explains why every bar or nightclub worth its salt hosts a reggae night on the Sabbath. But what about the rest of the week? Why should we sing the blues on what’s arguably the most depressing day? John Lee Hooker called it “Stormy Monday,” but we’re thinking a little reverse psychology might get us past Garfield’s least favorite 24 hours even quicker. Apparently the good folks at Purdy Lounge are in complete agreement. Forget your blues and enjoy some easy skankin’ at Rootsie Juicy, the weekly reggae bashment at the popular South Beach hangout.
At 11 p.m. every Monday, Jean P. Jam busts out some deep reggaelicious roots, while DJ Doormouse mans the ones and twos in the backroom, providing no shortage of sonic island ammunition. Working-class heroes might not want to hit the bottle too hard if they need to wake up on time in the a.m., but with three-dollar Yes-I beers, it’s hard to say no.
