Although Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim begins Thursday, none of you average-size, nonindustry folk will be able to sneak past its velvet ropes. It’s invitation only. But like the big soirees of Art Basel and Ultra, sometimes the satellite events promise better times anyway. The more accessible Funkshion Swim opens Thursday with runways built alfresco on 21st Street and Collins Avenue. Visions of spandex from designers Liliana Montoya and Lila Nikole kick off Funkshion with runway shows beginning at 8 p.m. The party continues through Saturday with showcases by Mad Sexy Lingerie, Cosabella, and Marc Jacobs Resort Wear. Mod Swim Week, sponsored by Designer Skin Tanning Products, takes over the rooftop penthouse at the Sagamore Hotel. Friday, see a Betsey Johnson Dadeland Boutique summer fashion show produced by Wasabi Fashion Kult. Saturday, catch the premier swim collection by Brazil’s Mariana London. And Sunday, watch Aussie brand We Are Handsome debut its latest quirky designs: wolf portraits on bikini bottoms, and hot-air balloon dreamscapes on leggings.
