Miami resident and tennis queen Serena Williams is nothing if not accomplished. More than just a tennis player, she’s also a philanthropist, fashion designer, model, actress, writer and co-owner of the Miami Dolphins. This is a woman who doesn’t know the meaning of “half-assed,” and that extends to the Serena Williams Ultimate Run South Beach, a quarter marathon and 5K. She’ll run with the throng of participants, so you’ll have the chance to trot next to (or more likely behind) the dynamo herself.
The run extends along Ocean Drive and through South Beach, and participants will score a Nike shirt, a meal certificate, recovery refreshments, and other swag. There’s also a post-race party, where maybe you can get some firsthand tips from Williams on how to be a badass. Proceeds benefit the Serena Williams Foundation, which offers assistance to families affected by violent crimes and provides underprivileged youth with better educational opportunities.
Be ready to run by 8 a.m. this Sunday at Lummus Park, east of the 1100 block of Ocean Drive and west of the dune in Miami Beach. Registration is $55 for the quarter marathon, $40 for the 5K run/walk, and $20 for the kids’ dash. Fees are lower for children, seniors, and military personnel.
