You hear the word Nike and you think expensive footwear and in-your-face celebrity endorsements. But today, the megacorp is trying to do more than sell you some hot kicks with glorified check marks all over them. Today marks the inaugural Miami Niketown 5K for Kids, a run/walk where children and their families can raise funds for their schools. All proceeds from race entrant fees will be donated to the physical education, play, and athletic programs of each runner’s choice. Consider it atonement for 40 years of Nike’s hand in your pocket.

The 5K run starts at 8:00 a.m., and the one mile run at 9:00 a.m. The starting line is at Niketown. The registration fee is $20, which includes a $15 entry fee, plus $5 for a Niketown 5K tee. Online entries are available at www.niketown5k.com.

Sun., March 18, 8 a.m.
