Florida: It’s a sunny place filled with shady people. You’ve likely heard the saying before, because Miami is one of the sunniest and shadiest parts of the whole state. And that’s nothing new. Just ask Dr. Abe Lavender, a sociology professor at Florida International University. He’ll tell you that the Magic City we know and love was founded, at least in part, on some superseedy deals that went down back in the day.
You can learn all about it at the Miami Design Preservation League’s lecture series, How Crime and Corruption Shaped Miami Beach. Over the course of four lectures, experts will explain how several forms of shadiness gave rise to modern-day Miami. Tuesday’s lecture, in which Dr. Lavender explains gambling’s part in South Florida history, kicks off the series; future topics include Prohibition (October 2), drugs (October 28), and vice (November 8).
