What’s it take to get art banned in Germany? Abortion, homosexuality, rape, child abuse, and suicide — at least in 1891, when Frank Wedekind wrote the play Spring Awakening. More than a 100 years later, the 19th-century play is now a rock musical and winner of eight Tony Awards. The production centers on a gaggle of school children on the confusing cusp of puberty. Their song-filled sexual freak-out is scored by singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik.
Miami’s New World School of the Arts — which boasts multiple Emmy, Tony, and Grammy winners among its alumni — will present its version of this dark musical about teenage sexual angst. Directed by NWSA theater professor James Randolph, Spring Awakening will be performed at the Colony Theatre.

Fri., Oct. 7, 8 p.m.; Sat., Oct. 8, 8 p.m., 2011
