Avant-garde painter and experimental film producer Hans Richter had a complicated relationship with art. His first exhibition took place in 1916 in Munich, but less than three years later, he began experimenting with film and eventually spent most of artistic career working with that medium. “The cinema can fulfill certain promises made by the ancient arts, in the realization of which painting and film become close neighbors and work together,” he wrote.
So Richter would likely approve of artist Wes Kline’s exhibit at ArtCenter/South Florida’s Project 924 (924 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach), which reinterprets one of Richter’s unproduced films. The show, titled “Minotaurocracy,” reimagines Richter’s Minotaur film as a series of interactive art installations, from performances to videos, sculptures, and, yes, even the “ancient” art of drawing. Think of it as viewing Richter’s original through a kaleidoscope crafted by Kline.
