Hip Hop Weekend, or as the rest of the country knows it, Memorial Day Weekend, has traditionally been confined to the clubs of South Beach. But on Sunday, the third annual Memorial Weekend Comedy Festival brings the festivities off the beach and into the James L. Knight Center.
Chris Rock is not part of the scheduled lineup, but his brother Tony (of The Tony Rock Project) makes a nice consolation prize. The brothers appeared in Everyone Hates Chris alongside another of the night’s comedians, Earthquake. If you’re a generation too old to have heard of that CW sitcom, though, you may remember TGIF alum Mark Curry of the infamous Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, who will also perform on Sunday night. Gary Owen, the one white comic scheduled, ironically got his big break when he won the “Funniest Black Comedian in San Diego” contest. And the lone female entertainer, Adele Givens, was featured on The Queens of Comedy with Academy Award winner Mo’Nique.
