The alleged inherent physical prowess displayed by athletes of color has provided comedic fodder for films like The Air Up There, Airplane!, and Cool Runnings. But these stereotypical attitudes have also spawned a number of discriminatory accusations in the sports world.

“There are some identifying factors that are specific to sport performance. But to say it’s inherent in all black people? You can’t make that generalization,” explains Charmaine DeFrancesco, associate professor of health, physical education, and recreation at Florida International University. Tonight she will separate myth from reality with a presentation titled Black Men Can Jump: Sports and Race. “People make stereotypes without having any kind of scientific perspective,” quips DeFrancesco. Arrive at 7:00 for wine, cheese, and a toast to continuing education. The presentation begins at 7:30 and marks the final event at MiamIntelligence.
