Some people think clothes are clothes, but others recognize fashion for what it truly is — wearable art. The Bass Museum of Art (2100 Collins Ave., Miami Beach) knows that fact and has dedicated a whole exhibit to some really out-there looks. “Vanitas: Fashion and Art” takes a close look at the avant-garde, ready-to-wear, and haute couture alike, exploring themes as heavy as “the ephemerality of earthly pleasures” and “life’s transience.” The exhibit also explores fashionable themes in the context of contemporary paintings, sculptures, industrial design, and new media. But you don’t have to be a Parisian fashionista to enjoy this accessible show.
The exhibit runs March 13 through July 20, but a special edition of A Night at the Museum this Wednesday will kick things off. It’s a fancy affair, and creative black tie is the call. The shindig begins at 8 p.m., and tickets cost $250, which admits two and includes museum membership. Big spenders can pay $1,000 and get their name on the donor wall. Call 305-673-7530 or visit bassmuseum.org.

Wed., March 12, noon; Sun., July 20, 5 p.m., 2014
