Looking for something cultural to do? Ballet might seem too twinkle-toe-ish for your beer-guzzling buddies, but this one is different. Anacaona: Queen of Hispaniola is a fusion of history, drumbeats, and dance. Through classical ballet — with strong accents of Indian rituals and ethnic beats — this performance tells a true story of pride, passion, betrayal, and murder.
@cal body 2:Anacaona was the queen of Xaragua, the last Taino kingdom in Hispaniola to be taken by Spanish conquistadors in the early Sixteenth Century. Her courageous struggle to save the Taino people and culture from extinction is being told in this unique show, which is an international collaboration of three prestigious ballet companies: Miami City Ballet, Haiti’s La Compagnie de Danse Régine Mont-Rosier Trouillot, and Ballet Nacional de Puerto Rico.
