When we were kids, the circus was a wondrous place filled with happy-faced clowns and acrobatic animals. But when we recently tried to revisit our youth one sober Sunday afternoon, we discovered this pill was one best swallowed with a splash of vodka or a visit from Puff the Magic Dragon. Because, let’s face it, the circus is made for young’uns whose interactions with critters and flying people are limited to the boob tube.
Legendary three-ring producer Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey rolls into the American Airlines Arena (601 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) this Friday through January 19, so round up your favorite rug rats, gather your party supplies, and prepare for fun under the big top. Ignore the stench of elephant poo and the legions of screaming kiddies — you might actually have a good time. The brothers have added flying dogs, a Globe of Steel, and Chinese acrobats to their usual lineup of tamed tigers and goofy ringmasters. Tickets start at $15, but if you pony up $95, you’ll be upgraded to Circus Celebrity and be a part of the ringside action. Visit www.ringling.com to get yours.

Will you step up to support New Times this year?
At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $17,800 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
