Independent Journalism in Miami Needs You
We need to raise $10,000 by August 9 to support the reporting our community depends on. Reader support keeps us independent and is playing a larger role in funding local journalism and shaping what comes next. If you believe independent local journalism matters, make a contribution today.
The energy of Miami Beach’s nightlife, exotic culture, and abundance of adult playgrounds (ahem, the sand) has led some people to dub our little island the gay Riviera. Well, this weekend everyone will call it that, because in addition to all of the usual accouterments, South Beach will be flooded with out and proud LGBT Americans celebrating SoBeFest.
Rainbow flags, pink triangles, and unbridled pride will be the symbols for this weekend’s celebration benefiting the South Beach AIDS Project. From Friday through Monday, eight events at almost as many venues will give revelers a place to raise money for a great cause while imbibing (sometimes) free Absolut cocktails. Friday night you’ll have to pay for your drinks at the SoBeFest Happy Hour from 6 to 10 p.m. at Halo, and then later at Fetish the 13th at Twist (1057 Washington Ave., Miami Beach), but DJs Jenni Foxx and Mika will be spinning some hypnotic tunes that will coax the money out of your pocket. Seventy-five bucks buys you a weekend pass that includes drink vouchers, the Girlie Brunch at Gem, and free access to all afterparties. Individual tickets are available but not as fun.
