Coming out as gay is rarely an easy process. When you’re a high-powered businessman married to a woman with whom you have kids, it’s pretty damn hard. And when, in addition, you’re a Maori descendent in New Zealand bucking tradition and unquestioned gender norms, it can seem near impossible. But you don’t have much of a choice when your lover shows up at a family vacation and you’re forced to reveal the biggest secret of your life. Such is the plight of Kawariki, the central character of Kawa, a film based on Witi Ihimaera’s semi-autobiographical tome, Nights in the Garden of Spain. The flick marks the start of the 14th annual Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival this Friday with a screening at 8:30 p.m. at the Colony Theatre (1040 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach) and is followed by an opening party.
