Did you know San Francisco has the smallest population of African-Americans, percentage-wise, of any major U.S. city? (7 percent) How many films have you seen that feature black people choosing bicycles over cars as their primary form of transportation? These are just a couple of the questions that informed Medicine for Melancholy, the first feature film by Liberty City’s own Barry Jenkins.
Taking his aesthetic cues from the French New Wave, Jenkins shot the film in only 15 days with a five-person crew, using the natural beauty of San Francisco as the backdrop to a love story that commences the morning after a one-night stand and follows two characters as they confront their feelings and their politics.
Jenkins will be on hand to conduct a live Q&A after each screening. The event is cosponsored by the CCCV guys, whom you might know from the Borscht Film Festival. One night only.
