The last time big, hairy creatures in saddles and bridles trotted along Miami Beach, the police had to arrest a few kinky foreigners who were unfamiliar with what’s socially acceptable here. In their defense, we must say the women really did seem to enjoy wearing the saddles, and apparently it was just an intense game of chicken. Maybe a few children were traumatized, but the authorities were more concerned with how déclassé the whole thing looked. If you’re going to play games involving saddles on beachfront real estate facing hotels that charge $750 a night for a basic room, then it better not involve bondage or, God forbid, cowboy hats. Which pretty much leaves one option — polo! The Miami Beach Polo World Cup will pit eight international teams against each other over three days.

A stretch of sand off Ocean Drive (between 20th and 22nd streets, behind The Setai) will be the temporary pony grounds. (You might not want to sunbathe anywhere near this equine litter box for at least a few weeks afterward.) VIP tickets cost $130 for today’s matches, $150 for the weekend. Games run from 1 to 5 p.m. today, until the championship match at 4 p.m. Sunday. Visit www.miamipolo.com.
