South Florida’s literary scene has been in a fascinating state of flux this year. A string of bookstore openings — from Quade Books in Aventura to the Roots Bookstore and Market in Liberty City to a new Steamy Lit location in Miami Springs — have delighted local bookworms in recent months. But the region has also seen the closures of longstanding shops in that time, and another one just announced it will close early next year.

Barnes & Noble Pembroke Gardens, a fixture in its Broward community, announced late last week that it will close on Sunday, January 18, 2026, after nearly two decades in business in Pembroke Pines. The store, part of The Shops at Pembroke Gardens, located at 14572 SW Fifth St., Pembroke Pines, shared the news in an Instagram post.

“It is with great sadness that we confirm the closure of this Barnes & Noble bookstore, as our lease has ended,” the post reads. “Our last day will be January 18, 2026. We have loved being a part of this neighborhood, and it has been our honor and privilege to be your bookseller for the last 17 years.”

The note encouraged store patrons to visit the nearby Pembroke Crossing store at 11820 Pines Blvd. going forward, and to follow the shop on social media at @bnpembrokepines.

Barnes & Noble Pembroke Gardens’ announcement follows the September closure of the bookstore chain’s West Kendall location. There was some consolation for loyal customers, though. Earlier that same month, Barnes & Noble cut the ribbon on its new Colonial Palms Plaza store at 13605 S. Dixie Hwy., Miami. Then, in October, the chain opened its Town & Country location at 8525 Mills Dr. in Kendall. Further afield in South Florida, the company opened a location in Naples at the beginning of this year.

Miami customers are also patiently waiting to learn the fate of Barnes & Noble Sunset Place, as its largely vacant home, once a social hub for local teens, is set for demolition next year. While nothing has been announced yet, the South Miami shop is one of Sunset Place’s anchor stores, and the current plan for a “foodie mecca” to replace the mall does not bode well for the bookstore.
