Think it is a coincidence that the World Peace Conference Miami is scheduled exactly one year after President Bush publicly outlined his national strategy for victory in Iraq? We think not. Miami will partake in the first year-long, worldwide celebration in honor of the 100th anniversary of an exalted yoga master’s birth. The free event, held at 6:00 p.m. today at Florida International University’s Kovens Center, features headliner Arun Gandhi — Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson — as well as various Christian, Jewish, Islamic, and other spiritual leaders.

“Arun Gandhi seems to be evoking the most intrigue,” says Frances Alban, public relations consultant for the event. “He has led a worldly and noble life, and his perspective and experiences enlighten.” The conference’s theme, “Peace Is Our Birthright: Creating a Unified Vision for World Peace,” will be highlighted in panel discussions, musical entertainment, and other activities.

Thu., Nov. 30, 6 p.m.
