Of course South Florida loves its Marlins and Heat, but if you take account of the glittering talent flowing from the New World School of the Arts (NWSA) for the past twenty years, can you think of an institution more deserving of a parade down Biscayne Boulevard?

Since NWSA opened in 1986, more than 3000 students of every ethnic and economic background have passed through its halls, and many have become successful artists, dancers, actors, and musicians. From Miami’s top galleries to museums, black-box spaces to theater stages, just spin the dial on a show and chances are a NWSA grad will head the marquee. Today at noon, NWSA will be closing down the street for its twentieth-anniversary block party, and the community is invited to the blowout. Nestor Torres will perform along with the NWSA Jazz Band, there will be a cake-cutting ceremony by city and state dignitaries, and a giant birthday card designed by one of the school’s arts students will be on display for revelers to sign.
