Imagine always having your projects compared to The Godfather; it can’t be easy for Francis Ford Coppola to have himself to beat. His recent attempt at filmmaking, Youth Without Youth, fell flat, but there are rumors his latest production, Tetro, hints at Coppola’s genius while recapturing the freshness of a director straight out of film school. His first screenplay since 1974’s The Conversation, Tetro exposes the fraught relationship between two brothers in an Argentine-Italian family, played by gaunt-cheeked Vincent Gallo and newcomer Alden Ehrenreich. It was filmed in black-and-white with splashes of color and has a freaky soundtrack where every chair squeak, grunt, and whisper gets equal volume.
