From Georgia O’Keefe to Pablo Picasso, depicting women as flowers is one of the most relied upon expressions of femininity in art. Flowers are pretty. Women are pretty. It’s a timeless idea, one that most people don’t tire of despite the lack of originality and dimension.
In a refreshing twist, two actresses are sharing the tougher side of plants, the fiercer side of females, with Fair Fauna: The Revolt of the Feminist Flowers. Presented by Belaxis Buil and Vanessa Garcia, Fair Fauna is a performance during which the women turn this metaphor on its head, dressing up and acting out against the stereotypical “soft” associations attached to flora. The lush grounds will become home to a synthetic balloon sculpture garden as the performers uproot and replant those long-held expectations of femininity. Buil is a performance and multimedia artist, as well as a professional dancer and choreographer. Garcia is the artistic director of the Krane, a Miami-based theater company that performs worldwide.
Fair Fauna will be presented this Sunday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Miami Beach Botanical Garden (2000 Convention Center Dr., Miami Beach). Tickets cost $20 via livingsocial.com. Call 305-673-7256 or visit mbgarden.org.
