Why replay those tired episodes of Ghostly Encounters when there’s real terror right here in South Florida? Well, the “real” is debatable, but the scary is guaranteed at the Deering Estate at Cutler (16701 SW 72nd Ave., Palmetto Bay), where ghost trackers say they’ve found more than 60 disembodied voices coming from the county-owned property over the years. Once the home of wealthy industrialist Charles Deering, the estate was featured in the October 2014 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine’s “Houses of the Spirits,” which includes some of the nation’s most haunted properties. The 444-acre land was once the domain of Paleo-Indians, North America’s earliest human inhabitants, who lived more than 12,000 years ago. October is the perfect time to explore the creepy findings with the Deering Estate Spookover, an all-night hunt for spirits in the historic houses and on the main grounds. Guides will lead guests to the most active spots on the property, where you can use your own equipment — dowsing rods, EMF meters, cameras, etc. — to capture the ghostly appearances as they happen. The Spookover happens Friday from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. Cost is $65 per person. Organizers advise you to dress comfortably and take a flashlight, mosquito repellent, and any equipment you wish to use. Light snacks and refreshments will be served. The tour may contain mature subject matter. Call 305-235-1668 or visit deeringestate.org.
