One family’s emotional and turbulent unrest is chronicled in this epic, award-winning rock musical that tackles the crippling effects of mental disorders and harrowing, life-changing moments. The mother, Diana, is manic-depressive, and her situation seems to be getting worse as she deals with a painful and haunting memory. Her husband, Dan, is caught in the tumult of trying to keep his wife from going over the edge while they raise their teenage daughter, Natalie. As Diana searches for answers and receives controversial medical treatment, she is confronted by a past trauma and wrestles with personal demons. Dan and Natalie are powerless to help Diana find her way through the darkness. Winner of three 2009 Tony Awards, including Best Original Score and Best Orchestration, as well as the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Next to Normal is a rigid and engrossing musical that looks at a family coping with open wounds, psychiatry, drug abuse, suicide, and the often impossible challenge of letting go, all while they lean on their love for one another.
