Fashionistas, erotic-art enthusiasts, and photophiliacs can delight in the fact that the World Erotic Art Museum (1205 Washington Ave., Miami Beach) caters to locals as much as it does Baselites. In cooperation with the Museum der Moderne in Austria, WEAM presents “Helmut Newton: A Liberating Focus” through March 3 — long after the tourists and pseudo-celebs have returned home to recuperate from Art Basel.
Newton traveled the world — making his way through South America, Sydney, Singapore, and London — and landed in Paris in 1945, but not before escaping a Nazi concentration camp. The famed photog snapped shots for French Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar but is recognized for much more than framing fashion. Known for capturing beauty, eroticism, humor, and sometimes violence, Newton has left a legacy that even Nan Goldin would appreciate. Seventeen of his most iconic works shot between 1982 and 2000 will be on display, including the complete Arielle Portfolio and seven images from the Cyber Women Portfolio.
