If you’re not particularly familiar with the history of dance, you might have heard George Balanchine’s name dropped only in highbrow chatter about mouse kings and sugarplum fairies. In addition to his timeless Christmas show, The Nutcracker, however, Balanchine choreographed countless other dance classics, which is probably why he’s known as the father of American ballet.
Miami City Ballet’s latest program, Hear the Dance, takes its name from Balanchine’s famous credo, “See the music, hear the dance.” Performers will twirl and leap to the work of three celebrated choreographers: Twyla Tharp (Nine Sinatra Songs, featuring ultra-glam Oscar de la Renta costumes), Paul Taylor (Mercuric Tidings), and Balanchine himself (Symphony in Three Movements). It’s a diverse look at neoclassical dance and a guaranteed thrill for anyone who appreciates a good jete (that’s a type of jump, for you newbies).
