The untimely death of Robin Williams, arguably one of the greatest performers to have walked the planet, left many of us shattered. So let’s seek some solace in an entertaining evening that pairs Steve Martin and Martin Short, men whose comedy credentials place them at the pinnacle of the show-business mountain. The pair’s careers have always intertwined; both got a solid boost from Saturday Night Live and costarred in the films Three Amigos and Father of the Bride (parts one and two).
On their own, they’re exceptional. Steve Martin has achieved success as an actor, musician, author, and playwright, although he’s probably best known as a “wild and crazy guy” and for playing a banjo with an arrow through his head. Short’s characters on SNL — the loose-limbed wacko Ed Grimley in particular — were bizarre enough, but it was his alter ego, the acerbic interviewer Jiminy Glick, on his Comedy Central series that affirmed his wanton weirdness.
Their joint appearance for what’s been billed A Very Stupid Conversation makes this event akin to a comedy summit. Though “stupid” may be the operative word, it’s likely that “brilliant” will be the better description. Judge for yourself at 8 p.m. Saturday at Hard Rock Live, 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood.
