As environmentalists go, the Lorax is pretty much the gold standard. The Dr. Seuss character who “speaks for the trees” stands against greedy industry and the destruction of natural settings — even when it’s for the production of Thneeds, which, of course, everyone needs.
So it’s safe to say the Lorax would be in favor of Thursday’s Festival of the Trees, a holiday tree decorating event that involves no cutting down of evergreens or blue spruces whatsoever.
Now in its 27th year, the festival gathers designers from far and wide to create Christmas tree décor from inventive materials (read: not actual Christmas trees). Prizes are awarded to the designs judged most elegant, most creative, most illuminating, and even most progressive, a highly Loraxian award.
As a bonus, designers have been asked to focus on “supporting cultural diversity through design and encouraging global connectivity among peoples, ideas, and interdisciplinary fields of thought.” There’s really no evidence that the Lorax supports multicultural mingling — he could be a white supremacist for all we know — but it’s nice to think he’d support the mission all the same.
