Dwyane Wade might call the American Airlines Arena his house, but the venue is about to be invaded by a very different kind of domestic rule. This weekend, the arena will be Madea’s domain when Tyler Perry brings in his touring stage production Madea’s Big Happy Family.
TP, who went from living in his car to becoming the sixth highest-paid man in Hollywood, has been turning out box office hit after hit, even though his black caricatures have irked critics such as Spike Lee. Despite the controversy, we all have a soft spot for his lady alter ego, Mable “Madea” Simmons, a large, outspoken grandma who packs heat in her purse and whiplash in her speech. Ms. Madea will invade the arena this Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. The play, like Perry’s other 11 productions, is getting great reviews.
