Independent Journalism in Miami Needs You
We need to raise $10,000 by August 9 to support the reporting our community depends on. Reader support keeps us independent and is playing a larger role in funding local journalism and shaping what comes next. If you believe independent local journalism matters, make a contribution today.
A love triangle including a beautiful woman, a dashing army officer, and a wealthy landowner told in Spanish and song. No, this is not your typical Univision novella. It’s the setting of Federico Moreno Torroba’s zarzuela, set during Spain’s 1868 republican-monarchist conflict. A zarzuela is a form of musical theater presented with Spanish lyrics and spoken word. Presented by Florida Grand Opera, Luisa Fernanda, which premiered in Madrid 79 years ago, is a heart-wrenching story about taking a chance on love, told with visually stylish set pieces and memorable musical theater. FGO’s production is conducted by Pablo Mielgo and directed by Emilio Sagi.
