It’s both maddeningly unreal and oddly respectful: Since his father’s death, Tito Puente Jr. has been touring the country, entertaining audiences with El Rey’s plethora of tuneskis accrued over decades of playing. Can Sean Lennon play his dad’s music and get away with it? Perhaps a man can’t choose his family, or his destiny, and we suppose there’s a whole gaggle of Hank Williamses out there.
Nevertheless, this Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Magic City Casino, Puente will jam out his father’s songs, and if you’re not a fan, you can at least go inside and play the “Kitty Glitter” slot machines (senior citizens’ discount!). But Tito Puente’s music played by his son, greyhounds chasing a fake bone around a track, busloads of retirees, and two-dollar hot dogs? How can you pass this up? Tickets cost $30 to $25 for club level and free for upper deck.
