Back when the Miami Theater Center (9806 NE Second Ave., Miami Shores) was known as the kid-friendly PlayGround Theatre, Pioneer Winter’s edgy, explorative, sexually charged, gender-bending choreography might not have made the marquee. But since the theater’s recent rebirth as the all-inclusive MTC, the venue can welcome new, envelope-pushing work without offending anyone’s delicate sensibilities. And Winter does enjoy pushing envelopes. Besides his apparent affection for skin-flashing and tendency to blur the line between the sexes, Winter’s recent risk-taking includes performing a dance duet in a delicately balanced canoe on Miami’s open water. In Pie Solo, a modern version of the one-man show, Winter will examine the concept of faith in culture and religion from three vantage points: age, sexuality, and queerness. The multimedia show will incorporate video installation in its storytelling, as well as a variety of dance disciplines, from tap dancing to stripping. The point is to engage the audience in a dialogue that blends humor, anecdotes, and representations of isolation.
