Miami Film Month is back, and it couldn’t have come soon enough. The summer movie season is a perfect time to duck out of South Florida’s oppressive humidity and frustrating sudden showers and into the soothing climes of an air-conditioned theater. Especially if it’s one playing more than just the latest explosion-fest, like any of Miami’s independent film centers: Bill Cosford Cinema (1111 Memorial Dr., Coral Gables), Coral Gables Art Cinema (260 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables), Miami Beach Cinematheque (1130 Washington Ave., Miami Beach), O Cinema’s locations in Wynwood (90 NW 29th St., Miami) and Miami Shores (9806 NE Second Ave., Miami Shores), and Tower Theater (1508 SW Eighth St., Miami). During Miami Film Month, audiences can pay $8 at participating cinemas.
This year, Billy Corben, he of the acclaimed documentaries and snarky Twitter persona, will kick off Miami Film Month with a screening of his own film, The Tanning of America, at the Lyric Theater (819 NW Second Ave., Miami). The showing will be paired with a Q&A with the director, as well as a reception where you can stage your own production of “The Drunkening of Miami,” if you so choose.
