In Miami, having a summer birthday is kind of a drag. The scene is so quiet and the weather so unpredictable that it can be hard to figure out how to celebrate. Unless, that is, you’re the Magic City Bicycle Collective, which celebrates the second anniversary of its launch this Saturday. Last year at this time, bicyclists and supporters of Miami cycling culture gathered at MCBC headquarters to toast the organization’s birthday and were caught in a massive summer downpour. But these bike people were too hearty to quit the party, and the festivities continued unmarred.
Members of MCBC are as committed to promoting biking in Miami as they are to rocking out in the rain. The nonprofit co-op provides services such as bike repairs and lessons in repair and maintenance from expert bike techs. Without the organization, Miami’s burgeoning biking community wouldn’t just be riding ragged; it might not exist in the first place.
So head to MCBC’s shop (1100 N. Miami Ave., Miami) for one birthday bash that’s worth the weather. The party, which starts at 6 p.m., will feature bike-related prizes, food by Pollo Tropical and Sear’N Gears, and drink specials by the Corner. So what if it rains? If a little shower bothers you that much, you might as well just go wait it out in your car, wuss.
