For 29 years the King Mango Strut has claimed that it “put the nut back in Coconut Grove.” Leave it to organizers of satirical procession to put those nuts in its mouth. No, wait. Put nuts where the mouth is? Okay, so both sound dirty. But it all made sense last night when they named A Pair of Nuts Comedy duo as the Grand Marshal of this year’s parade.
The selection might seem a bit out of character for the Strut, but then again, maybe that makes it just right. The comedy sketch duo of Yamil Piedra and Johnny Trabanco might not have national prominence of past selections like Janet Reno, or the innate satire of a “dead voter,” but it still works, and not just on the moniker front.
Piedra and Trabanco have been gaining steam as South Florida’s zaniest pair of funny guys over the past several years. The two met at FIU in the late 1990s and have some real performing chemistry, sort of Abbott and Costello meet El Gordo y La Flaca.
The have performed on Last Call With Carson Daly, BET, the Discovery Channel, the South Beach Comedy Festival, FunnyorDie.com, CollegeHumor.com. and at a bunch of other major festivals and venues. Earlier in the year Trabanco won the comedy derby at the Miami Improv. And maybe most importantly, they are leading the fight to bring back powdered wigs.
Check out some of videos of their silly antics below.
A Pair of Nuts will lead the King Mango Strut Procession through the streets of Coconut Grove on December 26 at 2 p.m. Parade route includes Commodore Plaza, Main Highway and Grand Avenue. For more information click here.
