“Dance like no one is watching,” Mark Twain wrote. We say, “Dance like the world is watching. Dance like you’re on network TV, it’s primetime, and you’re wearing a sequined bolero.” Pressure makes for a hell of a two-step. At this weekend’s Miami Dance Magic, there will be not only pressure but also workshops, open dancing sessions, and Saturday night’s Spectacular Show, where professional hoofers from the reality realm (So You Think You Can Dance, Star Search, 30 Seconds of Fame) will show off the moves that transported them from the dance floor to your boob tube.

This festival is all about moving your body. So whether you decide to shake it at one of the salsa classes or kick it old-school at the Strictly Swing class (both held in the Jasmine Ballroom), the key is to try something new. This Thursday night, beginning at 11 p.m., meet and greet and bump and grind at the kick-off party. The $15 fee includes a 7 p.m. workshop on the hustle, so whatever you do, don’t forget your dancing shoes.
Thu., July 16, 7 p.m.; July 17-19, 9-midnight, 2009

Will you step up to support New Times this year?

At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $16,750 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
