In the world of flamenco, Joaquin Cortes holds superstar status. The handsome, athletic Spaniard began his career with the Spanish National Ballet and then formed his own flamenco group — one of the first to mix classical ballet, flamenco, and modern dance. Later, he moved on to film, performed on Dancing With the Stars, and even became a model for a character in the videogame Metal Gear.
For his latest visit to Miami, he’s pairing up with the flamenco-jazz innovator and gypsy-style singer Diego Amador for “Flamenco Jazz Tribute.” Also a native of Spain, Amador is a musical star in his own right, having played and recorded with notables such as Chick Corea and Pat Metheny. Amador and his trio will provide the accomplished, sensual soundtrack to the dramatic onstage presence and movement of Cortes for their one-night stop this Saturday at 8 at the Fillmore Miami Beach (1700 Washington Ave., Miami Beach).

Will you step up to support New Times this year?
At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $16,750 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
