Gone are the days when you had to travel to Wynwood or the Design District to see hipsters in their native habitat. Now you can see them in all their tight-jeaned glory at Urban Apparel, South Florida’s newest and hottest retailer — which also happens to be a work of fiction. Presented by Project Theatre and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, Urban Apparel is a “pop-up immersive theater and fashion experience” where cool comes at a hefty price but judgment and pretension are free.” The performance piece/retail store mashup parodies brands such as Urban Outfitters and American Apparel and features a cast of “lifestyle associates,” AKA condescending, mustached, organic-food-eating hipsters. Plus, audience members (or rather “customers”) can purchase real merchandise from local boutiques and sip some homegrown craft beer throughout the show. So throw on those unnecessary dark-rimmed glasses, crank up the LCD Soundsystem, and get your hipster swerve on at Urban Apparel.
