Obama’s victory has not healed all the nation’s wounds. As far as comedy goes, there is a certain kind of irony that still divides us. To determine which side of the fence you’re on, ask yourself these questions: Did I like the Monty Python musical Spamalot? Do I watch Reno 911? Was I nutty about The Larry Sanders Show? If you answered yes, consider seeing the Actors’ Playhouse rendition of Gutenberg! The Musical! at the Miracle Theatre. Like the aforementioned works, this is another show about a show.
Two aspiring playwrights pitch their idea for a musical about the inventor of the printing press, Johann Gutenberg, to prospective Broadway producers. Be forewarned: Not everyone likes richly ridiculous, self-referential comedy. But if you’re prepared for a quirky, slightly dorky spoof that’s not Shakespeare, you should check out one of the performances. The play runs through January 4, with an additional matinee Wednesday at 2 p.m.
