Thanks to clubs such as the Vagabond, PS14, and White Room, NE 14th Street has turned into the dope downtown party block. And when the Urbanite Bistro opened nearby in mid-September, it meant the late-night crowd no longer had to rely on hot dogs to fill their vodka-hollowed bellies. They could now nosh on Moroccan lamb sliders and alligator egg rolls till the wee hours. And since those who wear Grolsch beer goggles also like to feast their eyes on art, the Urbanite Bistro is home to a rotating gallery; a new artist takes over the space monthly. This Tuesday night, meet the work of October’s featured talent, Latin American artists Gabriela Sanchez-Vegas and Rudolf Kohn. From 7 to 9 p.m., mingle with neighbors and strangers among Sanchez-Vegas’s collection of sculptures, called “Concrete Tears”; it’s a grouping of pieces that merges metal with symbols of feminine moods and emotions. Kahn’s “City of Love” comprises paintings representing the “windows to the soul” — called “eyes” in some circles — and their connection to one’s spirituality.
