Every year the hottest, smartest, hippest, and most talented black Americans gather to celebrate the contributions that the African-American community has made to the film industry. The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) has yet again put together a dizzying four days of film screenings, cocktail receptions, workshops, and master classes taught by renowned filmmakers such as Robert Townsend and John Singleton. This year’s festival kicks off Wednesday with the opening-night film, Townsend’s In the Hive, at the Colony Theatre. On July 7, check out The Enduring Significance of Boyz n the Hood at the Ritz-Carlton South Beach (1 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach) at 1:30 p.m. It’s a documentary about John Singleton’s seminal work followed by a Q&A session with the auteur himself. The rest of the fest, which runs through July 9, includes nearly 20 films, Bill Duke’s (Commando, Predator) Actor’s Boot Camp, and the ABFF awards afterparty.
