What’s better than diverse and subversive stage readings presented by young, hungry, and driven actors? Nothing, except when those stage readings also include music, audience interaction, and cheap admission. Ground Up & Rising, the award-winning theater and film organization, is doing just that for its fall season with the reading series Zero Point.
This Monday and Tuesday at 8 p.m. at GableStage, actor Curtis Belz will mash Manhattan Boricua, Brooklyn Polish, Bronx Dominican, and Jamaican patois together for a blend of New York monologues from Danny Hoch’s Jails, Hospitals & Hip-Hop. There’s a wheelchair-bound kid with a crack-smoking mom, a white kid who wants to be a gangsta rapper, and a cop who can’t figure out the race of a hot-dog vender. Presented with no lights and no set, the minimalist Zero Project series moves the focus back on the performance.
