The fourth-annual John Paul II International Film Festival (JP2IFF) is ready to take over Coconut Grove in a holy way. The festival is organized every year by 7eventh Day Media Inc., which is “committed to hosting the annual film festival that will give a home to filmmakers who have chosen to use this medium to express and share a message of hope, struggle, triumph, and love to the world.” Though the fest has a religious core, it isn’t screening only movies that you would only hear about at Sunday school. The opening-night film is Heaven Is for Real, starring the well-known and well-established Greg Kinnear. Based on the New York Times bestseller by the same name, the film tells the story of a father whose son claims to have visited Heaven during a near-death experience. Heaven Is for Real kicks off the festival Thursday at Paragon Grove 13 (3015 Grand Ave., Coconut Grove). Showtime is 8 p.m., and tickets cost $7 to $12. Visit jp2filmfestival.com or call 305-418-0939.
