We love the new millennium, but we miss the Nineties one-dollar gas prices, gaudy fashions, and — most of all — TGIF. The sitcoms that made up ABC’s all-important block of funny changed from time to time, but Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper shone bright for a few years, drawing viewers in with the promise of a Three’s Company-style show with some added flava. Mark Curry was the star, playing the lovable and kinda goofy title character, a basketball player and high school teacher. He lumbered into our hearts as a Mr. Nice Guy and roommate to two women and a baby, but his stand-up routine is decidedly less saccharine. Maybe you’ll miss the PG-rated jokery, but we’re thinking that during his stint at the Miami Improv from Friday through Sunday, you’ll be glad to peep his dirty side.
Since his days as Mr. Cooper, he has hosted Showtime at the Apollo and appeared on Def Comedy Jam and Kirstie Alley’s Fat Actress, so we guarantee he’ll meet your curse-word quota for the night. Showtimes are 8:30 and 10:45 p.m., but check www.miamiimprov.com for a complete schedule. Tickets cost $21.40, and don’t forget to bring a few extra ducats for the two-drink minimum.

Will you step up to support New Times this year?
At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $16,750 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
