If you’re piss-broke and wondering where to hide from the repo man, take heart. Tobacco Road, the Magic City’s oldest honky-tonk, is celebrating its 96th birthday bash with 96-cent drink specials from 6 to 7:36 p.m., and a night of booze-fueled revelry and musical merriment to drown your sorrows away. It’s a role The Road has played since 1912. The first pub to loom out of the darkness during our pioneer days, this joint has survived Prohibition, the Great Depression, killer hurricanes, disco, and those South Beach haunts spinning sounds cheesier than designer jockstraps pimped by Euro-trash.
At Tobacco Road, you won’t have to suffer anvil-fisted bouncers or deal with velvet ropes. Inside, check out the wooden walls covered by grinning mug shots of blues legends John Lee Hooker and others who have torched The Road’s stages and cemented its vibe. Friday night catch the Spam Allstars, Locos por Juana, Jahfe, the Coffee House Gypsies, and the Shameless Burlesque Show, and greet a brighter tomorrow while seeing double on the last train home. Tickets cost 10 bucks.
